Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
Preface: This guy wanted to trade an amp for my amp. Seemed fair enough, so I borrowed his amp and he borrowed mine. a week later he angrily texts me (very professional) that the amp is obviously broken and won’t work anymore.
So I say “Alright, I’ll trade you back.” I was fairly put off because I had just spent $120 to get the damn thing fixed. I get it back from him after some irate exchanges, plug it in at home. Haven’t had a problem with it in months and has been playing like it’s new. So I gigged on it, funk, jazz, everything and it played like a charm, never putting up a fight and always doing what I wanted it to.
Now that I’m looking to save up for a big move to somewhere I can gig in pit orchestras, I have to sell it. The guy contacts me again and says he’d like to buy it, but he could only offer $125 ($250 amp) because he would need to figure out what was wrong with it. I said “nothing is, and for me, never was.” He returns with insults that it’s because I’m a jazz musician and the amp must have gone soft from light playing. I told him I’d been playing with funk bands around town lately full bore so the volume is not the issue. He then starts to hack on my career, telling me that he’s played with 100’s of pro bands since before I was born and that I’m a goofy kid who just plays “jazz,” even adding that his 16 year old son thought I was a hack.
Listen you arrogant fuck-face. I haven’t spent 12 years studying jazz and jazz composition to have dickheads like you insult what I love. I’m glad all those 100’s of pro bands you’ve played with have taught you that mudslinging is the best form of negotiation. You want to earn the respect of your fellow musicians? Have some respect for them. It’s musicians like you that make the good people in this art seem much better. You’re not a Miles or a Jaco; if you can’t back up your shit then you best not be flinging any. Keep to your rock and your punk and leave my classical and jazz out of it. I just told him to never contact me again, especially if it’s just to insult my career and harass me.
NOBODY ADDS QUOTES AROUND THE MUSIC I LOVE AS IF IT’S NOT LEGITIMATE.
